Government Free LPG boiler scheme in Scotland
Do you live in Scotland and heat your home with LPG? You can now get a free LPG boiler through the Government Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme.
Previously it was only those on the mains gas grid gas who were eligible for Government boiler grants. However, changes to the ECO scheme have encouraged installers in Scotland to now focus on vulnerable households who are not connected to a mains gas supply.
Free LPG boilers are now being installed in Scotland as part of ECO
ECO organisers agreed that too much funding was being concentrated on providing replacement gas boilers. This gave households in urban areas an unfair advantage over rural communities in Scotland. In these areas there is a larger amount of homes that have LPG as their main heating.
Who qualifies for a free LPG boiler?
The ECO grant scheme is designed for low income homeowners, and private tenants in Scotland. You must get specific benefits to be eligible.
Landlords can claim a new boiler for more than one property if their tenant qualifies for a grant. However the offer is not open to council or housing association tenants. Local authorities in the UK have their own carbon emission targets outwith the free boiler scheme.
To take advantage of the offer your existing LPG boiler must have a low energy efficiency rating and be more than 5 years old. Furthermore someone who lives in your home must also claim one of a specific set of benefits or be on a low income –
- Boiler must be more than 5 years old
- Broken down or not functioning efficiently
Eligible benefits for the ECO scheme
- Income Support
- ESA – Income Related
- JSA – Income Based
- Pension Credit -Income Based
- Tax Credits*
- Universal Credits*
*If you claim tax credits or universal credits your income must be below a certain amount. The full eligibility criteria can be found here – Free LPG Boiler.
What is LPG heating?
Liquid Petroleum Gas is used to fuel central heating in areas that are not connected to the gas grid. It is popular because it is a high efficiency fuel which can be used in the same manner as a regular domestic heating system boiler or combi boiler.
The main difference is that the LPG has to be delivered to your property and stored in a storage tank or in cylinders which are connected to an LPG-fired boiler.
Benefits of an LPG boiler
LPG boilers are smaller and more compact than oil boilers. They function quietly and emit 20% less CO2 than their oil counterparts. This provides more flexibility in where they are installed.
Modern condensing LPG boilers are at least 90% efficient. This means it costs you much less to heat your home and your energy bills will be lower.
With a new LPG boiler you will be able to use modern apps and heating controls to control room temperature with a thermostat.
How many homes in Scotland use LPG?
Scotland has a number of homes than any other region of Britain that use LPG Boilers to fire their central heating. This is because there are more remote areas off-gas where alternative energy sources to gas must be used.
Other forms of energy such as solid fuel and oil are popular although there are over 20,000(2%) properties which use LPG boilers.

Areas in Scotland with LPG heating
In Scotland around 0.3 million properties rely on non-gas heating. This is a higher proportion than either England or Wales.
Traditionally these homes are in rural areas and are occupied by people on a lower income.
The Government is currently promoting the drive to improve the Scottish carbon footprint. A large part of this initiative is the replacement of old LPG boilers with new modern condensing LPG heating.
This is proven to reduce CO2 emissions and lower domestic energy bills.
