Free Boiler FAQ

Free gas boilers are available via the Energy Companies Obligation (ECO).

ECO is a UK Government backed boiler grant scheme which has been designed to help reduce energy bills and lower carbon emissions.

The scheme, which runs until the Autumn of 2018, provides access to non-repayable funding for the installation of free boilers in homes across the UK.

The ECO free boiler scheme is also designed to help improve our carbon footprint by reducing the  amount of Carbon Dioxide being released into the environment by older, inefficient gas boiler heating systems.

Why have boiler grants been introduced?

Grants for free boilers were introduced to enable people on low-incomes to install energy saving improvements in their homes.

If your existing boiler is old or not of the condensing type the chances are that it will not be functioning at maximum efficiency. This means it costs more to heat your home & hot water, and also releases more harmful co2 emissions into the environment.

All boilers installed via the free boiler scheme are A -rated gas condensing boilers. This type of boiler functions at a higher efficiency level and uses less energy to heat your hot water and central heating system.

Free boilers – who is eligible?

Free boilers are available in England, Scotland & Wales. As long as you own your own home or you are a tenant living in privately rented accommodation (and you have your landlord’s permission) you may be eligible for a 100% free boiler grant to replace your old boiler.

To qualify for a boiler grant your property must be viable. Smaller properties do not merit enough carbon savings to make installing a replacement boiler worthwhile. In cases where you claim the correct benefits but your house is too small you may be asked for a small contribution. The boiler installation will still be heavily subsidised by a Government grant.

The free boiler scheme is means tested and you also must be in receipt of one of the following benefits:

Pension Credit
Child Tax Credit (with an income of £16,010 or less)
Working Tax Credit (with an income of £16,010 or less)
Income Support
Income-based Job Seeker’s Allowance
Income-Related Employment Support Allowance

If you receive Income Support, Income-based Job Seeker’s Allowance or Income-Related Employment Support
Allowance one extra condition must also apply from the following to claim a free boiler.

You have a child under 16
You have a child under 20 in full-time education (not university)
You get Child Tax Credit including a disability element
You get a Disabled Child Premium
You get a Disability Premium
You have a Pensioner Premium
You have a Work Related Activity or Support Component (With Income-Related Employment Support Allowance)

If you are in receipt of Working Tax Credit one of the following must also apply:

You are 60 years of age or over
You have a child under 16
You have a child under 20 in full-time education (not university)
You have a Severe Disability Element
You have a Disabled Worker Element

Are boiler grants 100% free?

If you qualify for a boiler grant the installation of your new boiler will normally be covered by the grant scheme and it will be fitted free of charge.

However, if your home is already quite energy efficient or there is any extra work to be done you may have to make a small contribution.

The Government grant scheme is in place to help you improve the efficiency of your home. So if it is already energy efficient it may not be so easy to get a grant.

As a rule of thumb if your boiler is very old you have a better chance of securing grant funding. Also, if your house is quite large it costs more to heat so it may be more beneficial to award a free boiler grant due to the reduction in carbon dioxide emission levels

You will be informed at the point of survey whether you qualify for a free boiler or a subsidised boiler grant.

If your existing boiler is old or not of the condensing type the chances are that it will not be functioning at maximum efficiency. This means it costs more to heat your home & hot water, and also releases more harmful co2 emissions into the environment.

All new gas boilers fitted in the UK have an “A” rating. This means that they function at 90% efficiency which is a lot higher than many old boilers. Using less energy to power your boiler & central heating means you save money by reducing your fuel bills. You will also help the environment by cutting down the carbon emissions released by your boiler.

The free boiler scheme was set up by the Government and is funded by the UK’s largest utility companies.

A rise in energy costs has seen many homes struggle to pay high gas / heating bills. Pensioners, those on benefits & families with young children can find it particularly difficult to cope with the rising cost of gas & electricity.

The Government have now demanded that the energy companies help reduce the cost of heating homes across the UK by providing financial assistance to pay for free boiler upgrades. Free home insulation products are also available via the ECO scheme.

Which brand of boiler will I get?

At the moment free boiler grants are only available if your property is currently heated by mains gas. Your new boiler will be an A-rated condensing gas boiler from one of the major boiler manufacturers.

Each installer will have their own preference of boiler depending on price, warranty & manufacturer’s maintenance specifications etc.

Any replacement boilers installed as part of the ECO scheme will be A-rated, which means it will function at 90% efficiency.

All free boiler installations include a heating system flush and free home energy survey & assessment.

How do I apply for a boiler grant?

Submit your details and you will be contacted within a day or two. A qualified Domestic Energy Assessor will visit you to carry out a quick survey and book a date for your new boiler to be installed.

Your new boiler is normally installed within 3 – 4 weeks.

Who will install my new boiler?

All boilers installed under the free boiler scheme are vetted by the Government and are registered and Accredited Gas Safe Installers.

Will I still qualify for other energy grants?

Yes you can still receive grant funding for other products such as loft insulation and wall insulation.
