Under previous legislation it was only gas boilers that qualified for Government grants. However changes to the ECO scheme have encouraged installers to now focus on vulnerable households who are not connected to a mains gas supply.

Free LPG boilers are now being installed as part of ECO

ECO decision makers agreed that too much funding was being concentrated on providing replacement gas boilers. This gave households in urban areas an unfair advantage over rural communities.

There is a higher concentration of properties that have Oil and LPG boilers as their primary heating in these areas.

Who qualifies for a free LPG boiler?

The ECO grant scheme is designed for low income homeowners and private tenants in England, Scotland and Wales. You must claim certain benefits to qualify. Local authorities in the UK have their own carbon emission targets outwith the free boiler scheme.

To take advantage of the offer your existing LPG boiler must have a low efficiency rating and be over 5 years old. Furthermore someone who lives in your home must also claim one of a specific set of benefits or be on a low income –

What is LPG central heating?

LPG, or liquid petroleum gas is an alternative source of heating for dwellings that are not connected to the main gas grid. LPG is normally used as part of a wet central heating system.  An LPG-fired boiler provides hot water which is then used to heat your water and radiators.

LPG differs from gas heating in that the fuel is usually stored in an external storage tank in your garden and then fed into your boiler. Although some gas boilers can be converted to LPG gas.

Aside from the storage tank LPG works much the same as gas central heating and can be used with regular condensing and combi boilers.

Benefits of an LPG boiler

LPG boilers are smaller and more compact than oil boilers. They function quietly and emit 20% less CO2 than their oil counterparts. This provides more flexibility in where they are installed.

Modern condensing LPG boilers are at least 90% efficient. This means it costs you much less to heat your home and your energy bills will be lower.

With a new LPG boiler you will be able to use modern apps and heating controls to control room temperature with a thermostat.

Who uses LPG heating?

The majority of homes in the United Kingdom use gas as their primary source of heating. But in remote areas that are not on the mains network households are forced to use alternative sources of heating. Electric is the most common. Other types include solid fuel, oil and LPG.

New Government Free Boiler Grant Scheme In The UK

A new free boiler scheme which provides Government energy grants  for free boilers is under way in the UK.

The Government-backed  free boilers scheme, which is funded by the six major UK utility companies, provides hundreds of millions of pounds worth of grant funding to replace outdated gas boilers. In addition those who qualify can again take advantage of free cavity wall insulation and free loft insulation.

Who qualifies for free boiler replacement?

To qualify for the new free boiler replacement grants you must meet the criteria here – Free Boilers – FAQ’s

Are the boilers really free?

The boilers fitted via the Government free boiler grant scheme are supplied and installed completely free of charge. If you qualify for a grant you pay nothing towards the installation of the new boiler.

What type of boiler will I get?

The boiler grants scheme provides Grade A energy efficient gas boilers that come supplied and fitted. It is estimated that a new gas central heating boiler can reduce domestic energy bills by £500 per year. If installed along with free loft insulation and cavity wall insulation it normally means an average saving of around £800 – £1000 per year.

Installing these new energy efficient products not only helps reduce fuel poverty but helps reduce harmful CO2 emissions, which is the overall aim of the scheme.

Boiler Grants 2017

Government grants for free boiler replacements are still available in 2017-18

Government boiler grants which provide funding for free boiler replacement are still available throughout the UK. Free gas boilers are available as part of the Government-led Energy Companies Obligation (ECO).

The ECO boiler scheme is designed to help reduce the Carbon Footprint of the UK by enabling the installation of energy-efficient gas boilers in homes across the country. The boiler scheme, originally due to end in March 2015, has now been extended until 2017.

ECO boiler grants are means tested and designed to help those who cannot afford the cost of replacing their existing gas boiler.

Those in receipt of Pension Credits, Tax Credits and a range of benefits may qualify for a new boiler installation completely free of charge.

Energy efficient boilers function at a higher rate of efficiency and so help the environment by reducing Carbon Dioxide emissions. An efficient boiler uses less power to heat your home and hot water and therefore also reduces your domestic energy bills.

The full criteria for boiler grant qualification in 2017 can be found here – free boiler application.
